Wheel chocks are stable wedges made of metal, plastic or other suitable materials that are intended to secure parked motor vehicles including trailers against rolling away by blocking at least one wheel. Regulations for the design of wheel chocks are laid down in DIN standards 76051-1 “Wheel chocks for motor vehicles and trailers” and 76051-2 “Wheel chocks for agricultural vehicles, functional dimensions”, among others. Germany’s national road traffic regulations (StVZO) stipulate in section 41(14) (as at: 19 October 2012) that the following motor vehicles and trailers must be equipped with at least one wheel chock:
- Motor vehicles – except track vehicles – with a permissible total weight of more than 4 t
- Two-axle trailers (except semi-trailers, rigid drawbar trailers and centre-axle trailers) with a permissible gross weight of more than 750 kg
According to the same regulation, the following must be equipped with at least two wheel chocks:
- Three- and multi-axle vehicles
- Semi-trailers
- Rigid drawbar and centre-axle trailers with a permissible gross weight of more than 750 kg
When not in use, the wheel chocks belonging to the motor vehicle or trailer must be mounted in or on the vehicle in an easily accessible manner with holders so that they cannot become detached or rattle. Therefore, hooks or chains must not be used as holders for wheel chocks.
According to section 31b of Germany’s national road traffic regulations (StVZO), drivers of motor vehicles are obliged to show relevant authorities, e.g. the police, any objects they are carrying and to hand them over for inspection to ensure that they are in compliance with the regulations. This also includes wheel chocks.
Intentionally or negligently starting up a motor vehicle (possibly with trailer) in violation of the above-mentioned regulations on equipping with wheel chocks, their condition and installation constitutes a traffic offence according to StVZO, section 69a(3), No. 13.
